Nadezhda Boiko

Nadezhda Boiko (1916, Tula, Russian Empire – 1979, Riga, Latvian SSR) – an artist.

N. Boiko was born in Tula, since her parents were forced to evacuate from Courland governorate which became a theater of military operations during the World War I and, as a result, was occupied by German forces. Her father – Aleksey Boiko, was a senior accountant of the Talsen Treasury of Courland governorate, while her mother Iraida was a housewife.

After having returned from the evacuation, her father continued working in the field of banking, particularly, in the Incorporated Bank of Latvia.

From 1922 to 1929 Nadezhda Boiko had been studying at the 2nd German Elementary School of the City of Riga, but from 1929 to 1933 – at Riga Lutheran Gymnasium of German Evangelical-Lutheran Parishes. She also studied at the studio of an artist and architect A. Kramarev. From the 18th of October 1938 to the 31st of March 1939 she had been improving her skills of artistic painting in London (at her own expenses).

Before enrolling into the Latvian Academy of Arts, she had been working for 5 years as a painter at the Kuznecoff factory.

In 1940 Boiko enrolled into the Latvian Academy of Arts, where she studied for one year and later was forced to interrupt her studies due to being sent to Germany for work. After the end of the World War II, she returned to Latvia and in 1946 resumed her studies at the Latvian Academy of Art, from which she graduated in 1948.

Her works are exhibited at the Museum of Decorative Arts and Design in Riga, Riga Porcelain Museum and in private collections.
