Lev Bukovsky
Lev Bukovsky (1910, Riga, Russian Empire – 1984, Riga, Latvian SSR) – one of the most famous Latvian sculptors of the Soviet period.
Received his education at the time of the first period of independence of the Republic of Latvia. He graduated from the Faculty of Architecture of the University of Latvia and afterwards - from the Academy of Arts in Florence. In his works he strove towards plastic summarisation and laconism of form. His talent of a monument sculptor is more clearly seen in his work on the Salaspils Memorial Complex, which was created to commemorate the victims of Nazi concentration camps.
Lev Bukovsky was a member of the Union of Artists of the Latvian Soviet Socialist Republic, in 1957 he became People's Artist of the Latvian Soviet Socialist Republic. He was also a correspondent-member of the Academy of Arts.
