Olga Penerdzhi

Olga Penerdzhi (nee Gabay; 3rd of February 1895, Moscow, Russian Empire – 24th of October 1982, Riga, Latvian SSR) – a sculptor and a portrait painter.

Before the World War I she got married and gave birth to the daughter Irina (1914-2013).

Penerdzhi acquired the basics of sculpture in Moscow, where she studied at the Highest Art and Technical Classes.

At the end of 1928, after having received a one-year visa, Olga Penerdzhi departed from the USSR (where she left the daughter) and resided in Latvia, though she was still a USSR national. She managed to prolong her visa four times. Before the end of its validity, on 8th of February 1933 she married Samuel Penerdzhi (possibly, a relative), who was a member of the board of a joint-stock company "Maikapar" - the local tobacco empire. This marriage allowed her to stay in Latvia and receive Latvian citizenship.

From 1932 to 1938 she had been studying at the Latvian Academy of Arts at the department of sculpture.

During that time, Penerdzhi cooperated with the Kuznetsov porcelain factory.

Her work reached its zenith in 1940-1950ies.

In 1953 Olga Penerdzhi reunited with the family of her daughter Irina, who resided in Moscow, and also with her grandson - Igor Vasilyev (1940-1997), who later became (also, under her influence) a well-known Latvian sculptor.

Olga Penerdzhi was a member of the Union of Artists of Latvian SSR.

She died in Riga on 24th of October 1982 and was burried at the Forest Cemetery.
